Metalsmithing for Beginners!

It can be intimidating to jump into developing new skills, especially when there is so much information out there and a torch involved. Where to begin!? Teaching yourself has many barriers to entry, the cost of tools and materials, or not even knowing what tools exist or what they are called. This can be discouraging to say the least. I highly recommend checking out a few of the resources listed below, but more than anything, I recommend hands-on instruction. Depending on where you live, your local community college may offer continuing ed classes. If you live in or near Asheville, here at Ignite Jewelry Studios, we teach a 4 part workshop over the course of a month to help you build a strong foundation for your metalsmithing journey. With us, you will learn how to safely use a variety of tools and equipment common in a jewelry studio. As well as, techniques such as sawing, filing, polishing, textures and more! You will also gain access to our Open Studio sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays to practice applying the skills you are learning. Click here for more information and upcoming classes.

The Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight, will teach you the basics of tools and techniques. Great for learning the names of tools and processes as well as some instruction. You will definitely want to keep this close by!

A great resource for purchasing all things jewelry, be it tools, materials, or finding tutorials - Rio Grande is a safe bet!

And of course, Youtube! There are several great youtube channels if you just search around a bit. Andrew Barry is a great resource -he has videos on just about everything!

Also check out Deb Karash. She has designed two “Black Boxes” that are used for shaping and riveting and can take the place of many tools in a small package.  And check back with us for future workshops offered at Ignite Jewelry Studios with Deb!

We hope your jewelry learning experience is a successful one. Just remember to be patient and have fun! And stop by Ignite Jewelry Studios if you are in Asheville and visit us!
